The outbursts by former General Sir Richard Dannatt are both untimely as well as unseemly. Like politicians there is a need for a time of reflection before rushing into print. However from my studies of the military I never understood why there were so many generals, admirals and air marshalls all living a life of luxury when the front-line troops often suffered.
Clearly if we had spent less time on rushing into unwinnable conflicts there would be less need for the Dannatts of this world. What we need are armed forces fit for purpose. Having seen them first hand I have tremendous respect for all that they do. I question whether they should be doing what they have been asked to do and whether they have the right leadership to do so.
